Questions

Asbestos & Lead FAQs

How do I know if my Indiana home has lead paint?

If it was built before 1978, assume it does until testing proves otherwise. That is the year lead-based paint was banned for residential use in the United States. Much of Indiana's housing stock predates it. Intact, undisturbed lead paint is comparatively low risk; the danger comes from deteriorating paint, friction surfaces like windows, and any renovation that sands or disturbs it.

Is asbestos dangerous if I leave it alone?

Undisturbed, intact asbestos-containing material is generally lower risk than material that is damaged, crumbling or about to be disturbed by renovation. The danger is airborne fibres. The worst thing you can do is start a demolition or sanding project on an older building without knowing what is in it.

Do you test, or do I need a separate inspector?

For many jobs an independent certified inspector is the right call, because having testing and abatement done by the same party is a conflict some clients and lenders would rather avoid. We will tell you when independent testing is the sensible route and coordinate with whoever you choose.
